SOLO EXHIBITION MARLOU FERNANDA OPENS AT WORLD MUSEUM ROTTERDAM

On October 10, the exhibition "Marlou Fernanda: A Time for Everything" opened at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. With this multidisciplinary retrospective, Rotterdam-based artist Marlou Fernanda (born 1996) reflects on ten years of independent artistry and invites visitors into her colorful, personal, and sometimes confrontational world, where self-expression and the right to space are central.

The exhibition is structured as a journey through four "seasons" in her work and life. From her strikingly large paintings to never-before-seen sketches and handwritten notes: A Time for Everything offers a multifaceted and intimate glimpse into who Marlou is—as a creator, as a person, as a woman.

THE ROLE OF ALTER EGO NU-NU

At the heart of Fernanda's work is Nu-Nu, her alter ego that served as a vital channel for her expression for years. In the exhibition, we follow how Nu-Nu came into being, how this figure helped her make herself visible—and how she ultimately distanced herself from it. It's a journey that touches on questions of identity, family, and finding one's place in a world that doesn't always naturally embrace one.

Through handwritten texts and an interactive installation, Marlou Fernanda invites the audience to reflect on their associations and personal stories surrounding the themes of "self-expression" and "taking up space."

FIRST MAJOR OVERVIEW EXHIBITION

With previous presentations at Kunsthal Rotterdam and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, among others, Fernanda is no stranger to the contemporary art scene. With a strong online presence, her work—the characteristically large, colorful canvases and expressive videos—has become a recognizable voice within a new generation of artists. Marlou Fernanda: A Time for Everything now showcases the full spectrum of her work for the first time—the presentation is raw and reflective, powerful and vulnerable—just like Marlou herself. The exhibition closely aligns with the documentary Marlou Fernanda: Where am I going? (directed by Denise Janzée), which follows Fernanda's artistic journey over three years. The documentary premiered this fall at the Netherlands Film Festival and will also be shown at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam on Saturday, November 8th, in collaboration with Roffa Mon Amour.

Marlou Fernanda: A Time for Everything can be visited and experienced from October 10, 2025, to May 3, 2026, at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam.
