Throughout the month, the museum’s public square becomes a lively meeting place. Here, visitors can experience the city’s multicultural identity through food, performances and inspiring stories.

Whether you’re a local or visiting Rotterdam this summer, Fenix offers plenty of reasons to explore Katendrecht.

Experience Rotterdam’s cultures through food, music and art

The summer programme begins on 1 July with Free Heri Heri For All, an initiative that brings people together to commemorate freedom through food. Visitors can enjoy a complimentary serving of the traditional Surinamese dish heri heri, freshly prepared by Soul Food Lovers, while DJ Rochand provides live music throughout the afternoon. The event celebrates connection, remembrance and the diverse communities that make Rotterdam unique.

A few days later, on 5 July, Fenix celebrates Cape Verdean Independence during Liberdade. Music takes centre stage with morna (the soulful sound of Cabo Verde) alongside live performances by Danilo Tavares, storytelling, film screenings and authentic Cape Verdean cuisine. The event highlights the strong cultural ties between Rotterdam and one of its largest international communities.

North Sea Round Town brings Korean culture to Katendrecht

As part of the city’s annual North Sea Round Town festival, Fenix collaborates with Pocha Rotterdam for a special evening dedicated to Korean culture and Rotterdam’s growing Asian community.

Artist Chaerin Im presents Midnight Resets, an immersive programme where live music, food and personal stories come together. The evening offers visitors the opportunity to discover Korean traditions while connecting with the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

Outdoor art transforms Plein this summer

Art lovers can visit Plein from 14 July until 30 August to experience Hotel Europe (1997) by Dutch artist Harald Vlugt.

This large-scale installation features four monumental tables that together form a map of Europe, created from hundreds of handwritten envelopes. Visitors are invited to become part of the artwork by purchasing a postcard. Following an exclusive Fenix stamp before posting a personal summer message through the installation’s dedicated world mailbox.

The interactive artwork reflects on travel, communication and human connection, perfectly fitting Fenix’s mission of telling stories about migration and movement.

Willem de Kooning returns home

On 18 July, Fenix marks a special milestone by unveiling Willem de Kooning: Rotterdam – New York.

Exactly one hundred years after the celebrated artist left Rotterdam to build his career in New York, three of his sculptures will be installed on the museum’s waterfront. The exhibition pays tribute to De Kooning’s international legacy while celebrating his Rotterdam roots.

Celebrate Summer Carnival with the whole family

Families visiting Rotterdam during the summer holidays shouldn’t miss Kindercarnaval on 19 July.

Inspired by the city’s famous Summer Carnival, the event introduces children to this colourful tradition through music, dance, storytelling and delicious food. It’s a fun and accessible way for young visitors to experience one of Rotterdam’s most iconic cultural celebrations.
