Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks

The days are getting shorter and it's getting dark outside, but in Rotterdam, the lights are coming on during the Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks! A new winter festival where Rotterdam residents join forces to turn on the lights in the heart of the city.

From December 12th to January 4th, the city center will be transformed into an atmospheric winter backdrop full of light, camaraderie, and coziness. On December 12th, a colorful light parade (the Rotterdam Warm Winter Parade) will kick off the Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks.

The people of Rotterdam themselves are the inspiration for the winter program. During the Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks, entrepreneurs will create extra ambiance and coziness in the city center, while creative makers will make the city center shine with unique light projects.

For example, stroll through the China Lightbaan on the Lijnbaan – with illuminated flora and fauna. Spot the large parrot – a nod to the Lijnbaan from the 1950s – and the Blue Fish on the roof of Toffler. Make a wish at the magically illuminated Wishing Tree, admire an illuminated Hofplein, which will mark the contours of the future green city square during this period, and view the illuminated shop windows, including a living window display in the former Donner building on Binnenwegplein, conceived by students of the Rotterdam Academy.

Mayor Carola Schouten:

“During the Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks, we showcase what our city is all about: warmth, solidarity, and doers who care for each other. From entrepreneurs to artists, from residents to volunteers—all these ‘city heaters’ make Rotterdam a little more beautiful and brighter. At a time when it sometimes feels like we’re on opposing sides, we’ll turn on the lights together. For connection. For hope. For each other. I look forward to meeting you this winter in the heart of our city.”

Pilot

The Rotterdam Warm Winter Weeks will launch in 2025 as a pilot edition. "The light parade and the program were created in a short time with the help of many enthusiastic Rotterdammers. Together, we'll turn on the lights. Not only for added ambiance and coziness, but also for improved visibility, connection, and a safer feeling on the streets. With sustainable, smart, and more energy-efficient lighting, the city will literally get a greener glow this year that will remain visible for weeks after the holidays!" says the Rotterdam Center Organization.
