Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam has the opening night at Theater Zuidplein

Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam shows more than Houses

The thirteenth edition of Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam will take place from 6 to 10 October 2021. Opening night is in the brand-new Theater Zuidplein with the festive world premiere of Venice Elsewhere. LantarenVenster is the main location and at RDM Rotterdam there will be a Drive-In Cinema.

AFFR screens documentaries and feature films from at home and abroad that address these subjects. Complemented by introductions, discussions and debates about the present, past and future of architecture and urbanism.

After twelve events, AFFR has grown to become a leading film festival for architects, city lovers, film buffs, and students. The festival connects a wide audience with new and existing places in the city. That way enhancing the status of Rotterdam as a city of architecture.

The United Nations calculated that more than two billion houses are needed to be built this century to accommodate the growing world population. For the Netherlands, there should be one million in the next ten years. This challenge is the theme of the upcoming festival. With More than Houses, AFFR will explore the parallel worlds emerging behind the walls of our homes, and how they are shaping the society for which we are building.

Architecture films investigate the meaning of the city and architecture. They portray cities, buildings, and their designers and show that architecture cannot be understood without its context, and investigate the role of the city in our everyday lives. Moreover, they frequently reveal architects and urbanists to be powerless gods whose works, once built, acquire very different meanings and functions to those envisaged.

Drive-In Cinema by Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam

You can watch compelling films from your own car on Thursday 7, Friday 8 or Saturday 9 October at 8 PM, in the heart of Rotterdam’s dockland. AFFR selected three classic architecture films that explore the challenges of today in gripping style. Tickets cost € 34.50 per car for two people, including two drinks. The sound of the film is broadcast via FM frequency so make sure the car radio is working. The frequency is announced upon arrival. Visitors can only leave the car to visit the toilet and to collect drinks or nachos or snacks. These are provided by Esa’s Nachos food truck.
