For over ten years Anne Reitsma has been the official photographer at the World Port Days. But she also enjoys photographing the people who work in the port. Her new exhibition consists of 16 large portraits and 6 panoramas on the Maritime Museum Rotterdam.
The exhibition is called Young in the Harbor. It is on display from now until the end of September. The expo is part of the 45th edition of the World Port Days. It takes place on September 2, 3 and 4. For the third year, the work of Wereldhavendagen photographer Anne Reitsma can be viewed free of charge by visitors to the Wereldhavendagen, the Maritime Museum and casual passers-by.
For her series, she portrayed young people working in the port of Rotterdam. The number of vacancies is expected to increase significantly in the coming years due to the ongoing energy transition, the digitization of the port, and other future challenges. With her photo series, Reitsma literally gives that future a face.
“All the stories we try to tell during World Port Days can be traced back to young people in one way or another,” Anne Reitsma says. “So I wanted to show the current developments in the Port of Rotterdam through young eyes. In the context of the daily work that everyone is photographed in, it becomes clear that the port is an incredibly dynamic, diverse and inclusive place, where there are career opportunities for everyone.”
“What’s also encouraging is that ten of the 22 participants are women, without me having to do my best. So there is indeed a shift going on among young people in a world that is often seen as ‘male.’ I have been received incredibly warmly by everyone who participated and I have enjoyed their enthusiasm and interest.
