The Netherlands rings in the New Year with the National Fireworks

Once again, the Netherlands will welcome the new year with the National Fireworks: the country’s largest fireworks show, held over the iconic Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. For over 15 years, this spectacular event has been a cherished tradition, recognized both within and beyond Rotterdam. Known for its impressive eco-friendly fireworks, the show has become synonymous with celebrating the start of the new year in style.

This national New Year’s tradition will once again light up the skies above the Erasmus Bridge, ushering in the year with a colorful and breathtaking display. Organizer Mark Rouwenhorst (JMR Event Makers) shares his enthusiasm: “It’s the biggest fireworks show in the country, which makes it so special for us to organize. For more than 15 years, we’ve been building this event, and I can confidently say it’s grown into a true tradition for people in and outside Rotterdam. We’re really looking forward to it and are hard at work preparing everything!”

A Spectacular Show

This year, even greater emphasis is being placed on enhancing the experience for visitors along the quay, transforming it into a true event and festive celebration. Additional screens and audio systems will be set up along the waterfront to ensure everyone can enjoy the show no matter where they stand. Music will kick off at 10:30 PM, and the countdown to midnight will play a central role.

Rouwenhorst explains, “That’s what it’s all about! Counting down those final minutes and seconds with 70,000 people all together—that’s something truly magical. This year, we’re highlighting that moment even more, and with the extra screens and audio, we hope to add an extra dimension to the visitor experience on the quay.”

A Safe Alternative

For over 15 years, the National Fireworks Display has been a staple of the city’s New Year celebrations. People travel from far and wide to witness this extraordinary show, with hotels fully booked for three nights, local hospitality businesses bustling with guests, and tickets for New Year’s Eve parties selling out well in advance.

Moreover, the show provides a safe alternative to private fireworks, significantly reducing the associated risks. It also raises awareness about firework safety, showing audiences young and old that they don’t need to set off their own fireworks to enjoy a spectacular display.

Rouwenhorst notes, “Fireworks are a beloved tradition in our country, but they often come with nuisances and safety hazards. Through our professionally organized show, we give tens of thousands of people the chance to enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly, celebrating the new year in a festive way.”

The National Fireworks also strives to minimize its ecological footprint by using eco-friendly fireworks and offsetting its carbon emissions through an annual donation to Trees for All, an organization dedicated to large-scale reforestation projects both in the Netherlands and abroad.
