The Rotterdam Public Library at the corner of Hoogstraat and Binnerotte opened in 1983, it’s in urgent need of renovation after almost 40 years of intensive use. Design teams were invited to tender for this major project. From the 22 (national and international) applications, five design teams were selected. Their designs were exhibited this spring so the public could give their opinion. The winning sketch for the new Central Libary has been made by Powerhouse Company, Atelier Oslo, and Lundhagem. The landscape design is by DELVA landscape architects.
Together with Buro Happold, responsible for the installation advice and construction, and ISIS Bouwadvies, cost management, the partners will further develop the sketch design into a preliminary design and later into a final design. The consortium led by Rotterdam-based Powerhouse Company was chosen by the committee as the best out of five candidates. The Rotterdam-based companies Kraaijvanger Architects, KCAP, and ZUS were also in the running.
The assessment committee believes that the winning team has found the best balance between preserving the value of the building and transforming it into an inviting library for now and the future. The designs were judged on the components building, interior, exterior and the plan of approach for the further design process.
Central Library is once again the prominent place
Theo Kemperman, director of the Central Library, said: “The design team led by Powerhouse Company will ensure that the new Central Library is once again the prominent place it was when it opened in 1983. In the heart of the city, as the connector in the large network of parties who together make Rotterdam stronger. A gift from the city to the city!”
The team of architects, who have extensive international experience in the construction of libraries, will now develop the sketch design into a preliminary design. This is done in close cooperation with the library, the municipality, and other stakeholders. The sketch design for the outdoor space still requires the necessary attention. During the course of the project, this will be discussed with local residents, among others. The city council will decide on the preliminary design in mid-2013.
In the coming period, Rotterdammers will be informed about the progress of the renovation. By means of podcasts and a talk show. These are being prepared in collaboration with AIR Rotterdam. Information evenings about the renovation of the Central Library will also be held for various target groups.
