From the 17th of January 2020, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam will bring the successful Pearl production back on stage for the last time. The baroque spectacle became a hit in the theaters in 2011 and 2013 with an almost sold-out tour and more than 50,000 visitors. The highlights are the spectacular performance in the Ziggo Dome and a tour in the cradle of the Baroque, Italy.
Baroque comes alive
Pearl breathes the rich, theatrical atmosphere of the baroque and is made with the speed and dynamics of today. Sensuality, splendor, but also decadence and intrigues come to life in Ed Wubbe’s choreography.
Characteristic of Pearl are the swirling group dances in the colossal costumes with wide hips. Partly because of this, the spectator soon finds himself at the court of Venice. The well-known baroque ensemble Combattimento recorded a special performance of mostly unknown arias and pieces of music from the treasure trove of baroque music. The drama is just as human and theatrical as the staging is.
Pearl is about beauty and the inevitable decline and has all the ingredients to move a new audience.
