Japan lovers already have some places to visit. Yama is one of the best Japanese restaurants, Nishi brings the super sweet Kawaii style, Shofukan is a cultural center and Souffle Café serves Japanese Soufflé Pancakes. Now, there’s also a true Japanese Deli: Osōzai.
Osōzai means ‘Daily Japanese dishes/delicatessen’ and that’s exactly what’s offered at the Jonker Fransstraat 105A. The shop provides authentic Japanese delicatessen made from the freshest produce and offers an abundant assortment of exclusive Japanese products. Owners Kevin and Mai want to bring Japanese food and culture in a vegan and halal-friendly way so everyone can enjoy it.
Mai is originally from Japan and missed food from her homeland. So she and her husband Kevin decided to open a deli of their own after being present on the Rotterdam Oogstmarkt on Noordplein. There they already sold, among other things, pickled vegetables and hot dishes by Kevin. He has worked in many different kitchens, both in Rotterdam and in Asia.
At Osōzai you can find Hello Kitty bags and Pokémon origami but also imported sake, soft drinks, noodles, sweets and much more. Like prepared fresh dishes to eat on the spot or take home. Donburi for example, is a hot bowl with rice as the base and various toppings. Each season, different pickles are sold. Such as pumpkin, lotus root, tomato and ginger.
There are snacks such as shrimp croquette and Japanese sandwiches and pastry, like croissants, macarons and eclairs.
Osōzai is open from Wednesday to Sunday. From 12 PM to 7 PM.
