Nieuw Rotterdams Café gets a makeover with new menu and artistic touches

The iconic Nieuw Rotterdams Café on Witte de Withstraat has been a popular spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and dancing for years. After 12 years, it has undergone a major interior upgrade and introduced a new globally-inspired sharing menu. The redesigned space features warm red walls and curtains that create an intimate atmosphere. The menu offers a mix of classics like the NRC burger and international dishes such as ceviche, oysters, and steak tartare. NRC also continues to highlight art and culture, currently showcasing a body painting series by artist Marcel Labrie, photographed by Sud, on its Culture Wall.

Osteria Sala Federico is Kralingen’s Italian living room where you’ll immediately feel at home. The “sala” has a menu (that changes daily!) full of traditional, regional dishes which are hard to find at other Italian restaurants here. Owner and chef Peppe gets all his products directly from Italy, because only the best is good enough. Good to know, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, pizza with fresh burrata from Puglia is also served. Plus, it’s a great spot for lunch!

De Doelen is an impressive concert hall in the middle of the city. Its history goes back centuries. With new studios in the plinth, De Doelen is bringing vibrancy back to the ground floor. There are eight studios dedicated to kids, food, content creating, art, discussion, radio and more. But music is number one. With recurring events like the Monday Night Jam and the Reggae Café, it’s a stage for local talent. Most of the programming is free of charge.

OPIUM FOR THE STATE TREASURY

For many years, the Netherlands was involved in the opium trade and even operated its own opium factory in Batavia. From procurement to production and sales to distribution, the entire chain was once controlled by the Dutch State. Opium was even a legal product in the Netherlands until 1919. In an exhibition, the Tax & Customs Museum shares stories about the importance of the opium trade for the state treasury and its evolution from medicine to addictive drug. It runs until 31 August.
