Historic Rotterdam tall ship arrives in the United States

One of Rotterdam’s most iconic maritime landmarks has arrived in the United States. The historic Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde is taking part in a series of international events celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence, representing the Netherlands along the American East Coast.

Built in 1917, the Oosterschelde is the only Dutch sailing vessel participating in the festivities. The ship recently arrived in the United States and will visit several major ports, including Richmond, Norfolk, Greenwich, Yonkers, New York City, Boston, Quincy and Portsmouth.

Leading the fleet in New York

A highlight of the journey will be the ship’s participation in Sail4th New York City on 4 July. During the celebrations, the Oosterschelde will lead the international fleet parade, one of the key moments of the anniversary programme. Millions of visitors are expected to attend the event, which is being described as one of the world’s largest maritime celebrations.

Captain Gerben Nab says the crew is honoured to represent Dutch maritime heritage during such a historic occasion.

"It is a special opportunity to showcase the Netherlands and welcome visitors on board to experience our rich maritime history," he explains.

A Rotterdam maritime icon

The Oosterschelde has a unique place in Dutch maritime history. Following an extensive restoration between 1988 and 1992, the vessel returned to service as a sailing training ship. The project remains the largest restoration of a historic sailing ship ever completed in the Netherlands.

Today, the three-masted topsail schooner is recognised as a protected sailing monument and one of the last operational historic sailing ships of its kind in the world.

Open to visitors

During its American tour, the Oosterschelde will be open to the public free of charge. Visitors will have the opportunity to step aboard, explore the ship and meet the crew while learning more about Dutch seafaring traditions.

After completing its programme in the United States, the vessel will continue to Canada before preparing for its Atlantic crossing to Spain. The Oosterschelde is expected to return to the Netherlands on 1 October after nearly ten months at sea.

For Rotterdam, the ship remains a proud ambassador of the city’s maritime heritage, carrying more than a century of history across oceans and connecting cultures around the world.
