Depot and Villa West win Architectenweb Awards

There is no other platform that is so intensively used by Dutch architects as Architectenweb. Every year Architectenweb Awards are given in several categories. This year Depot has won the Best Public Building and Villa West is awarded as Interior of the Year.

Villa West is designed by MASA architects. They converted a former Unilever sports building into a a liveable environment. The building on a private courtyard in the inner city of Rotterdam was stripped bare, revealing the original raw foundation of the space. The purist architecture of the original space was transformed into a cosy living environment around it, reusing materials and adapting the building structure for a residential function.

Another aspect of enhancing the identity of the building has been achieved by blurring the boundaries between the interior and the exterior. The surrounding green space is continued in the inner space. Large home plants create an impression of a continuous garden.

The jury was unanimous in its choice of the interior of Villa West in Rotterdam as the winner. The project is a high-quality transformation of a former sports building into a home for a private client. It’s done with exceptional precision and sensitivity.

Depot wins Best Public Building

Accoring to the jury the Depot for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen by MVRDV is an unmissable structure. Strongly present between the park and the architecture of the existing museum buildings. The choice of a reflective, convex shape results in an interesting facade and a special effect. It is a surprise that you can look out over the city from the ground level via the façade. The depot is open to the public, enabling the museum to make its collection widely accessible and to fulfil its social role.

The Rotterdam based architecture firm Ector Hoogstad was regarded with the award for best School. They designed the new R10 building for Fontys in Eindhoven.

The ceremony for Architectenweb Awards took place at Keilepand. This re-war fruit and vegetable warehouse has been transformed by GROUP A in collaboration with studioADAMS into an activity-based building where similar-minded entrepreneurs give meaning to a sustainable future. The Keilepand is located in the Rotterdam Makers District of Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) Rotterdam.
