Ed van der Elsken

ODE TO LIFE

Ed van der Elsken, one of Holland’s most famous photographers, loved to photograph people, especially men and women who were unconventional. At an Amsterdam market, for example, he focused his camera on a blonde woman with a pack of poodles whose hairdos were every bit as extravagant as their owner’s. In Asia, punks were one of his favourite subjects. In his own garden, he immortalised a couple making love behind a barn. He also immersed himself in artists’ colonies. It took the Nederlands Fotomuseum quite some time to restore all of his old colour slides. Now, finally, the museum offers a colourful presentation of this hotshot photographer’s work.
