Pixel Pioneers at the Depot

Digital art takes centre stage in Rotterdam

From 25 April 2026, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents Pixel Pioneers, a forward-looking exhibition at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen dedicated to the evolution of digital art. As technology continues to shape everyday life, from smartphones to gaming, this exhibition explores how it is transforming contemporary artistic practice.

Visitors can expect a dynamic mix of algorithm-generated paintings, immersive audiovisual installations and interactive retro games. Alongside contemporary works, the exhibition also highlights pioneering pieces from the 1960s, offering context on how digital art first emerged and continues to evolve today.

A key highlight is the restored installation Horizons (2008) by Dutch artist Geert Mul. This interactive work responds to visitors’ movements, allowing them to create ever-changing digital landscapes. Its restoration offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of preserving digital artworks, a growing topic within the art world.

The exhibition also features artists such as Christopher Kulendran Thomas, who combines artificial intelligence and painting to explore identity and history, and Larry Achiampong, whose installations highlight the cultural and personal impact of gaming. Together, the works examine themes like authorship, technology and the blurred boundaries between digital and physical realities.

With Pixel Pioneers, Rotterdam once again positions itself at the forefront of innovation, offering visitors a fresh perspective on art in the digital age.
