Kendell Geers sees art as an ideological filleting knife. As the curator of EVERYTHING IS TRUE – NOTHING IS PERMITTED, he brings together bold and provocative works that challenge societal norms. The exhibition, running from March 8 to June 15 at Brutus in Rotterdam, features powerful pieces by Marina Abramović, Cassils, Regina José Galindo, Kara Walker, Edith Dekyndt, Santiago Sierra, Selma Selman, Gilbert & George, Arthur Jafa, Alfredo Jaar, and others.
This exhibition is both a celebration and a protest. It highlights the power of art to inspire, heal, confuse, disrupt, and challenge expectations. At the same time, it takes a stand against the commercialized art world, where financial value often overshadows artistic impact.
The featured artists refuse to be mere decorators of a lifestyle or producers of alternative assets. Instead, they tackle urgent issues such as police violence, racism, beauty standards, power inequality, and capitalism’s excesses. Their work does not preach but rather exposes, questions, and provokes. Through their art, they offer a way to process the madness, stress, and traumas of today’s world.
About Brutus
Brutus is an experimental art space in Rotterdam’s M4H harbor area, founded in 2008 by artist Joep van Lieshout. It is not a museum but an Artist-Driven Playground, giving creators the freedom to explore all disciplines—from sculpture and performance to painting and video installation. The artworks reflect the spirit of the times and are meant to provoke, inspire, and challenge audiences.
Brutus consists of two foundations:
- Brutus Space – hosting exhibitions and collaborations with various artists.
- Brutus Base – focusing on projects linked to Atelier Van Lieshout.
