Ecstasy by Sanne Sannes

Long before the #metoo movement there was the 1960s, a radical period of time throughout the world marked by equal rights movements for all. It was during this time that budding photographer Sanne Sannes left his mark. Sannes is known for his intimate and erotic portraits of women. Shot in close-range, Sannes makes it nearly impossible for the viewer to avoid feeling a deep-seated connection with the portrayed female. While the photographs feature nude women, frontal nudes are rarely displayed. The women were mainly photographed from the waist up, as Sannes was more interested in capturing their desires, fears, and shyness as opposed to purely sex. Today, where the idealisation of women is seen through social media and in porn, this 1960s retrospective photo series juxtaposes our ideas about the female body.

Ecstasy by Sanne Sannes, from 1 February until 10 May at the Kunsthal, Museumpark, Westzeedijk 341. Open Tue-Sat 10 AM – 5 PM, Sun 11 AM – 5 PM.
