Joost Swarte Renaissance man

Joost Swarte Everywhere

Celebrate 50 years of Dutch cartoonist Joost Swarte this autumn at the Kunsthal.

“Joost Swarte Everywhere” presents Swarte’s work during the last 50 years–from his first comic in 1969 (The true story of Mr. P”), to his more recent work in 2015 (“The Order of Life”). The exhibition documents work from creation to the final product; from the first sketches to completed books, covers and screen prints. His works have an immediate aesthetic appeal: lines are crisp and clear while the colours strategically draw the viewer’s focus to a specific moment in the picture. This, combined with the Swarte’s use of humor, makes his works difficult to dislike. There are traces of Swarte everywhere.

Once you see his work displayed in the museum, you will be hit with a strong feeling of déjà vu because you have probably seen his work before. He has been commissioned globally for Belgian, French, American and Spanish publications, including the prominent The New Yorker. His children’s comics Okki and Jippo also gained him popularity in the Netherlands. In addition to his comics, he is involved in creating work for posters, stamps, record covers, stained glass and even architecture. After visiting this exhibit, it will be impossible not to spy the sublime works of the illustrious Joost Swarte.
From 14 September 2019 to 12 January 2020 at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, Museumpark, Westzeedijk 341.
Open Tues – Sat 10 AM – 5 PM, Sun 11 AM – 5 PM.
