This week ‘nederland ⇄ bauhaus – pioniers van een nieuwe wereld’ (pioneers of a new world) will open, with more than 800 Bauhaus objects. It is the last major exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen before a major renovation. On Saturday 9 February, the day of the opening, the museum is free for everyone!
2019 will mark the 100-year annivary since the Bauhaus was founded, the legendary art and design school whose influence is still felt in contemporary design and architecture. This exhibition gives a unique insight into the inspiring interaction between the Netherlands and the Bauhaus and for the first time exposes the Dutch Bauhaus network in a large overview, with a huge collection of objects and works of art. A book with twenty essays on ‘nederland ⇄ bauhaus’, and an interactive digital tour will also be available at the exhibition. Plus, Bauhaus-related events will be taking place across Rotterdam.
The Bauhaus worked from the ideal that beautiful and functional design should be accessible to everyone. The radical design language and innovative production techniques are still of great influence today. The Bauhaus ideas spread through a network of people, exhibitions, magazines, conferences, education and workshops. Not only in Germany, but also in the Netherlands, especially after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933. ‘nederland ⇄ bauhaus – pioneers of a new world’ uses art, furniture, ceramics, textiles, photographs, typography and architecture to show the influence of the Bauhaus in the Netherlands and vice versa.
